Sixty-seven percent of U.S. households, or about 85 million families, own a pet, according to the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA). This is up from 56 percent of U.S. households in 1988, the first year the survey was conducted. Americans love pets and businesses love Americans, so shouldn’t businesses show our love for pets too? If you’re not marketing to pet owners, you’re simply missing an opportunity!

Pet-Friendly

The way to a pet owner’s heart is to acknowledge their pet. Delivery drivers have been building customer relationships for years through furry friends. Have you ever heard someone comment on how they love a mail carrier because they know their dog’s name? How about a drive-thru that treats pooches? With so many people considering their pets “family members”, it’s the perfect time to get your brand on some pet promo. Think back about 30 years to when we gave 5-year-olds stickers; those 5-year-olds are now 35-year-old pet owners and they don’t want stickers anymore, they want their pets to join them for shopping and lattes.

It’s not uncommon to see pets at parades and Farmer’s Markets but now more than ever, we’re seeing Fidos in aisles and Kitties in carts. The companies welcoming these four-legged friends aren’t just accommodating their customers, they’re marketing themselves as pet-friendly for a reason! A Crazy Cat Lady will surely choose a store that allows her furry feline companion over one that does not. And how could you possibly compare a store that welcomes Man’s Best Friend over one that does not?
Here are a few pet-friendly stores:

  1. Petco
  2. Home Depot
  3. Lowes
  4. Tractor Supply Co
  5. Nordstrom
  6. The Apple Store
  7. Bass Pro Shops
  8. Pottery Barn
  9. LUSH
  10. Macy’s

Pets are the new babies when it comes to promo opportunities. More pets are recipients of biscuits in bank drive-thrus than toddlers are of mystery suckers these days. This is a brand-building opportunity for delivery drivers, banks, retail stores, veterinary clinics, dog salons, doggie daycares, and any business that wants to market to the 85 million pet-loving families in this country!
