Jetsetters are told to put their own oxygen masks on first for good reason. Breathing is necessary; as self-care is essential. You need to take care of yourself first because the relationship you have with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have. The gift of self-care is the greatest gift we can give ourselves, and encouraging those we care about to focus on self-care is one of the most thoughtful gifts we can give others. Whether it’s a gentle reminder to a coworker to take a deep breath, providing our families with nutritious snack options, or giving our business acquaintances and customers rest & relaxation gifts this holiday season; a subtle gift to promote self-care is a gift that keeps on giving. So don’t wait for those New Year’s resolutions, it’s always a good time for REVITALIZATION & REJUVENATION (#selfcare)!
You were only granted one body, so it’s important to take care of it. Regular medical care is important. Getting enough sleep is important. And proper nutrition is detrimental. Every one of these affects your mood, and therefore; how you treat (and are perceived by) the people around you. You owe it to yourself and the people in your life to maintain physical wellness. Commit to fueling your body with a regular schedule, a fair amount of rest, and healthy foods that supply your body with energy.
There are two components to the psychological element of self-care. The first is to reflect. We can’t move forward with new and clear thoughts if we’re still clouded by old ones. This can be achieved by journaling, therapy, or joining a club or support group. The second part is to clear your head by taking part in relaxing activities like painting, gardening, or reading a book. Make an effort to understand your own thoughts, feelings, and frustrations and then move forward with clarity.
This is the part where we allow ourselves to feel. And don’t forget to allow those around you to feel also. Cry. Laugh. Practice self-forgiveness. Show yourself some self-love for once. Cry it out, and then turn it around and remind yourself how great you are! But keep in mind there’s a time and place for everything so save those tears for the shower, dry them off, and then treat your fabulous self to a day at the spa!
Spirituality is the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things. Sometimes we need to disconnect in order to refocus. Turn off the screens and play with your pets and kids; dance with your partner; learn to meditate; or clear your mind, body, and spirit with yoga.
Get to know yourself and figure out what you want in life, and then make a plan to get there. Make goals to learn new things and travel to new places. Stop feeling guilty about self-indulgence. We can’t expect others to do things for us that we aren’t willing to do for ourselves. It’s okay to vacation solo, drink a glass of wine alone or buy a beautiful bouquet of flowers simply because they smell good.
